Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival

28th Mar 2007

The University of Southern Mississippi will host the 40th anniversary of the annual Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival on March 28-30, 2007, at the new USM Thad Cochran Center and you are cordially invited to register to attend.

The Children’s Book Festival is an annual event sponsored by the School of Library and Information Science and the deGrummond Children’s Literature Collection. Each year teachers, public and school librarians from across the nation come to hear and see major speakers, concurrent sessions, and workshops as young adult and children’s authors and illustrators share their experiences.

The highlight of the festival is the presentation of the Southern Miss Medallion awarded to an author or illustrator for his body of work. This year’s Medallion recipient is Eve Bunting. Featured returning medallion winners include Russell Freedman and Lee Bennett Hopkins with M. E. Kerr, Leonard Marcus, Coleen Salley, Janet Stevens and Scott Cook.

Make plans to join us for this very special celebration of 40 years of the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival and the deGrummond Children’s Literature Collection! Please visit the website at http://www.childrensbookfestival.org for more information.

Workshops are available for CEU credit: http://childrensbookfestival.org/Workshop_descriptions.pdf

CMLC Scholarship for Library and Information Science Students

CMLC Scholarship Guidelines:
The CMLC Scholarship fund’s purpose is to provide financial assistance
to a student in an American Library Association-accredited library and
information science Masters Degree program. The $500 Scholarship may be used for any purpose related to the recipient’s degree program expenses.
In the spirit of former University of Southern Mississippi library
science professor Dr. Laura Long’s generosity to students, recipients
are encouraged to use the scholarship to enhance their education by
attending lectures, exhibits, or conferences.

Selection:
The applicant must currently be enrolled in an ALA-accredited Masters
Degree program and have completed six (6) hours. The applicant must
currently be an employee of a Mississippi library and must not have
previously been awarded this scholarship from CMLC. Preference will be given to employees of CMLC member libraries. The successful recipient will have demonstrated a genuine commitment to the profession by participating in activities that further library skills or enhance
knowledge among library professionals within the state. Thus, the
scholarship may be used for any purpose that is reasonably connected to
the field of library science.

Nominations for the MS Authors Award 2007

Please go to MLA’s website for the nomination form which can be submitted electronically. The address is http://www.misslib.org/index.php/awards-scholarships/mla-awards-scholarships/mississippi-authors-awards/mississippi-authors-awards-nomination-form/

Someone asked a few weeks ago about the MS Authors Award Medallions. These and an order form can be found at misslib.

The books that win the award must meet certain standards. So please be sure that the book you nominate conforms to the following:

Criteria for the Award:

1.      Awards may be presented in two categories, fiction and non-fiction, if meritorious works have been published in each category.

2.      The honored author(s) must be a Mississippian or have lived in Mississippi for at least five years.

3.      An editor or translator may be considered.

4.      The honored author(s) must be living.

5.      The award(s) shall be presented for a specific work rather than a body of work.

6.      To be eligible for consideration, a book must have been published within three calendar years preceding the year in which the award is made.

7.      Each work should be judged on its overall quality, with consideration given to literary merit, style and technique, originality, and if applicable accuracy, authenticity and illustrations.

The committee may give a special award at its discretion.

Thank you so much for your help with the nominations. We have some very eager people waiting to read the books that you think are worthy of this award. After all the books are read and reviewed, the committee will vote for the winner or winners.

The MLA Web Committee is happy to launch a new MLA Web site!

During the past few months we conducted a Web Site Survey, and most people who responded liked the look and organization of the new Web site. You can see the results of the survey in PDF format at: http://www.misslib.org/MLAWebSurveyResults.pdf

The people who responded also gave us some suggestions for improvements, many of which we implemented. You can see a list of the suggestions and how we responded at: http://www.misslib.org/MLAWebSurvey.pdf

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments. You may fill out the Web site survey or email webmaster@misslib.org.
