Technical Services Round Table 2008 Spring Workshop

Cataloging Today and Tomorrow

Friday, April 25, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The 2008 Spring Workshop will present several topics related to cataloging, with a focus on tools, technology, and change. Two sessions (Cataloging Tools and Wikis) will provide opportunities for hands-on learning, so please bring your wireless laptop to the workshop. Luncheon will be on your own. Drawings for door prizes will be held at the beginning of the afternoon break (you must be present to win). CEU credit for this workshop has been approved by Mississippi Library Commission.

The workshop fee is $10.00. Please complete the Registration Form and mail it with your check (payable to Mississippi Library Association) to arrive by Tuesday, April 22, 2008 to:

Instructional Services Librarian for Undergraduate Programs @ University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee (UT) Libraries invites applications for the position of Instructional Services Librarian for Undergraduate Programs. The successful candidate will join a team of four librarians in the newly organized Integrated User Services (IUS) Department. We are seeking an instruction librarian who has a passion for teaching and guiding undergraduate students, who is excited about contributing to the evolution of our learning commons, and who possesses an affinity for the application of emerging technologies to instructional services. Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Minimum salary is $44,000.

Required qualifications: ALA accredited master’s degree. Applicant should demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the philosophy behind the continuing evolution of a learning commons. Possess knowledge of current trends in information literacy and evaluation as well as an understanding of learning theory and its integration into successful instructional technologies. Provide evidence of experience using web authoring tools and an awareness of the application of Web 2.0 to library services and the learning process. Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Must demonstrate an ability to articulate the place of the library in the higher education curriculum and to interact with faculty in a diplomatic and positive manner. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment accompanied by initiative, self-direction, and commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence. Commitment to research and creative achievement.

JOB DESCRIPTION

General Statement of Function: The assistant librarian will be involved in all phases of library operation. The position requires an ability to assist with informational needs, maintain documents, catalog, select and order new material, and control a circulation desk. The job includes working two nights each week. The assistant librarian works under the supervision of the Goodman librarian.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assists students and faculty through individual and/or class instruction in library skills.
2. Assists in selecting, purchasing, and processing new materials of various formats.
3. Maintains documents in a systematic and proper manner.
4. Is responsible for the physical upkeep of the library.
5. Operates a SIRSI Unicorn automated library system.
6. Maintains knowledge of information retrieval (from print through the latest technology methods, such as online databases).
7. Assists in planning, developing, and implementing library programs and also promotes events which present a positive public image of the library.
8. Displays a working knowledge of MARC records for cataloging purposes.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Library Science. Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred.
2. Five years of library work experience is preferred.
3. Understanding and commitment to the community college concept.
4. Excellent references from previous employers and/or professors.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Holmes Community College Library System, composed of the main library on the Goodman campus and branch libraries at the Ridgeland Campus and the Grenada Center, provides students, faculty, and staff with instructional materials which enhance and support the mission, programs, and activities of the college.

THE COLLEGE: Holmes Community College is a comprehensive community college district with campuses in Goodman, Grenada, and Ridgeland. The college serves a nine-county area that has a population of approximately 190,000. All three campuses are located near I-55. Holmes has a current enrollment of over 5,100 students.
