Cataloging Today and Tomorrow

Friday, April 25, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Mississippi Library Commission, 3881 Eastwood Drive, Jackson

The 2008 Spring Workshop will present several topics related to cataloging, with a focus on tools, technology, and change. Two sessions (Cataloging Tools and Wikis) will provide opportunities for hands-on learning, so please bring your wireless laptop to the workshop. Luncheon will be on your own. Drawings for door prizes will be held at the beginning of the afternoon break (you must be present to win). CEU credit for this workshop has been approved by Mississippi Library Commission.

The workshop fee is $10.00. Please complete the Registration Form and mail it with your check (payable to Mississippi Library Association) to arrive by Tuesday, April 22, 2008 to:

Map Cataloging Workshop

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) will co-sponsor a Map Cataloging Workshop on Thursday, November 1, from 9 am to 4 pm in the William F. Winter Building in downtown Jackson. Participants will learn the basics of map cataloging, including scale, main entry, MARC tagging, and subject headings.

Course instructor is Susan Moore. Moore has more than 20 years of map cataloging experience and has been teaching map cataloging workshops since 1999. She is a member of the Map and Geography Round Table of the American Library Association, and currently serves on the MAGERT Committee on Cataloging and Classification.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) and is open to the public. Cost of the workshop is $220 for SOLINET members and $270 for non-members. To register, call SOLINET at 1 800 999-8558 or register online at www.solinet.net.

MLA Technical Services Round Table Spring Workshop–May 4th

Dear TSRT Members and Friends:

Would you like to update your knowledge about the exciting new field of metadata cataloging?

Would you like to be able to understand metadata protocol and be able to use it to organize your library resources?

Then the MLA Technical Services Round Table Spring Workshop will definitely be of interest to you!

This year’s program will offer an entire day’s training on the Foundation and Use of Metadata taught by Dr. Eunkyung Chung, an Assistant Professor at the School of Library and Information Science at USM. Dr. Chung, who recently finished her PhD at the University of North Texas, currently teaches two courses at USM in Metadata and Digital Libraries. She will share a wealth of current information about Metadata and its uses at the Spring workshop this year.

The morning program, Foundations of Metadata will include the definition, function and categories of metadata, metadata standards, metadata languages and technical standards

The afternoon program will feature examples of digital projects that were undertaken using metadata to organize library collections.

CEU credits will be available to all who request them. Anyone requesting CEU credits must attend both the morning and afternoon sessions.
