    Research & Instruction Librarian and Assistant Professor

    Position Description

    The University of Mississippi Libraries invites qualified applicants to apply for the full-time, tenure-track, 12-month faculty position of Research and Instruction Librarian and Assistant Professor on the Oxford campus. This position works closely with faculty and staff at an R1 research institution to design and deliver user-orientated information literacy instruction and research support that align with course outcomes and library goals. This position reports to the Library’s Head of Research & Instruction Services.

    Responsibilities:

    • ·         Serve as a member of the Library’s First-Year Instruction Initiative and collaborate with library and campus departments to support student success goals of both the Library and the University. This includes teaching and assessing first-year student instruction sessions, workshops, events, and orientation activities.
    • ·         Serve as a library liaison to assigned departments or schools. Liaisons cultivate partnerships with campus units by teaching library resources and services that support their undergraduate and graduate courses as well as their research and collection needs.
    • ·         Provide face-to-face and online research support to students and researchers on the Oxford campus and regional campuses; create digital learning objects as needed; provide reference support through an online chat service
    • ·         Contribute to librarianship, research, and service at a level appropriate for a tenure-track faculty member of the university

    Required Qualifications

    • ·         Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program by the date of hire
    • ·         Familiarity with trends in academic librarianship, specifically related to information literacy, instructional strategies, emerging technologies, and collection development
    • ·         Demonstrate initiative and a commitment to pursuing professional development, research, and service at a level appropriate for promotion and tenure at the university
    • ·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • ·         Ability to manage multiple priorities, independently and collaboratively, with sound judgment, and effective time management

     

    Salary: $55,000/year and includes the university’s competitive benefits package

    The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture & History seeks a dynamic individual with proven leadership qualities to direct the West Virginia Libraries Section. 

    The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and creative, with a vision for how the Section can adapt and thrive in a changing landscape of library funding and technologies. Through the duties described here, the candidate will serve all 170 public libraries in West Virginia.

    The current Director of the Library Section also oversees the West Virginia State Library and its Library Development Department, the West Virginia Special Services Regional Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, the Culture Center Public Reading Room, and the Library Section Administration Department.

     

    The State Librarian reports directly to the Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, soon to be the West Virginia Department of Tourism as of July 1, 2025.

    Responsibilities

    • Work with public libraries, community groups, and state agencies to develop and implement programs to advance and improve library services across the state
    • Oversee the Culture Center Public Reading Room, circulation, cataloging, and public library outreach
    • Conduct site visits and attend events and meetings at various public libraries
    • Communicate with public library directors across the state frequently 
    • Share information about statewide databases and resources available to all West Virginians through the library system
    • Represent West Virginia in national library-related initiatives, such as the Library of Congress’s Center for the Book Program, which entails housing the West Virginia Center for the Book and representing the state at the National Book Festival
    • Oversee the West Virginia Regional Library for the Blind and Print Disabled
    • Oversee the administration of federal, state, and other grant funds to West Virginia public libraries

    NORTHEAST REGIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM

     DIRECTOR

    • 1.     Coordinate activities between the branch libraries and the various departments of the HQ library.
    • 2.    Prepare materials for quarterly regional Board meetings that cover all aspects of library service. Write grants, prepare budgets, assist the Board with policies, and maintain library services.
    • 3.    Oversee the purchase of all materials and services needed for the operations of the library system.
    • 4.    Develop and maintain an active public relations program including print, radio and on-line coverage.  Engage in speaking engagements that promote library services.
    • 5.    Participate in professional organizations as possible. 
    • 6.    Attend library conferences, lectures, workshops and other events as part of the Northeast Regional Library continuing education directives.
    • 7.    Provide professional advice, assistance and supervision to all department heads.
    • 8.    Represent the library in cultural, civic, educational, business and industrial activities.
    • 9.    Keep all necessary records for the library system as required by state law and by record retention guidelines.

    Staff Management

    • Create yearly budget for Corinth Building Board and attend all meetings to ensure correct fiscal and legal actions are being taken.  Also give updates to this board regarding NERL policies, programs, etc.

    Advocacy

    • Arrange for publicity for programs and activities.
    • Write social media posts for region.
    • Write press releases for newspapers and website.
    • Communicate with elected officials (town/city, state, national) regarding library issues.
    • Build partnerships with others in the community – patrons, schools, businesses, civic groups, etc.
    • Select weekly/monthly book giveaways on social media.

    Program Planning

    • Plan new programs and services.
    • Advise staff regarding programming & services.
    • Arrange for monthly books giveaways via social media.
    • Attend virtual and in-person training events, as well as watch recorded sessions as possible.
    • Write grants as time allows.
    • Research new trends in library services.

    Policies and Procedures

    • Answer staff questions about policies & procedures.
    • Review policies every 3-5 years and amend as necessary.
    • Create new policies as need arises.

    Facilitate NERL Board activities

    • Create agenda for meetings.
    • Go over financial and circulation reports and documents to present to board at each meeting.
    • Stay in contact with board members regarding meeting attendance, upcoming new policies, and any special events.
    • Walk board through all points on the agenda at meetings.
    • Plan training for board members for each meeting.
    • Orientate new members as necessary.

    Patron Communication

    • Answer phone calls and emails from patrons.
    • Address patron comments (whether positive or negative) with appropriate staff and patrons as issues arise.

    Mississippi Library Commission

    • Keep MLC consultant advised of all operations and seek advice as necessary.
    • Submit paperwork (applications, reimbursement requests, final evaluations) for yearly grants.
    • Submit paperwork for annual Accreditation Report.
    • Report yearly statistics to MLC and federal government.
    • Report yearly Summer Reading Program statistics to MLC and federal government.

    Responsibilities:             The Director is responsible for all library management areas, including but not limited to Personnel, Collection Development, Budgeting, Policy Development, Management, and Implementation, Grant Writing, E-Rate Application, Community Relations, Records  Management and Accounting, and Long-Range Planning.  Working with and filing financial information and reports with various agencies of the federal and state Governments. The Director reports, works, and is accountable to a five (5) member Board of Trustees appointed by the Carroll County Board of Supervisors.  Said Director is also accountable to adhere to all regulations and statues of the Mississippi Library Commission and those of the State of Mississippi.


    Requirements:                A master's degree in library science is preferred (but not required).  The minimum academic requirement is a bachelor's degree.  Mandatory completion of or plan of completion of nine course hours of master's degree courses in Library Science is required by the Mississippi Library Commission if the successful applicant does not have an MLS/MLIS.  Such a plan must be completed within three (3) years of being hired.  Public Library, supervisory, and        administrative experience is highly preferred.  The successful candidate must have computer skills  and a record of excellent customer service and leadership.  A knowledge of Quick Books (financial software) is preferred.


    Salary & Benefits:          The starting annual salary is $32,000 - $38,000 based on a 40-hour work week.  Benefits include personal and medical leave, paid state health insurance, Mississippi Public Employees' Retirement, and the opportunity to participate in the State's life insurance and deferred compensation plan.  Evening and weekend or after hours work may be required. Travel and participation in library-related educational programs and conferences will be required.  Upon successful completion of the Master's degree requirements, reimbursement          will occur.


    Place / Environment:      Time will be spent at both branch locations (two days per week at Vaiden, with 3 days per week at Carrollton.  Most of the work is office-type business that may include interruptions. A substantial amount of math and calculations are involved.  Considerable community involvement (outside regular library hours) will be required; daily contact with the library staff is essential.  Frequent contact with the community, public officials, local agencies, and other organizations is crucial.  Travel during the workday and on behalf of the library is    required, for instance, attending supervisors' and  town council meetings a minimum of once quarterly.

    The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Libraries invite applications for two exciting opportunities: Research and Education Informationist and Research Impact Informationist.     Research and Education Informationist

    The Research and Education Informationist will provide research and knowledge management services to students and faculty from the College of Graduate Studies and selected programs within the College of Health Professions. Reporting to the Associate Director, this position will work closely the Office of Research, the South Carolina Clinical & Translational Research (SCTR) Institute, MUSC Libraries, and other campus partners to support and enhance research impact services. An ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science or an advanced degree in informatics, data science, health sciences, statistics, biological, life, or physical sciences. 

     

    • Salary: commensurate with education and experience, with a minimum salary of $70,000.

    Job Summary

    Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Branch Manager is responsible for the execution of all library branch operations. This includes, but is not but not limited to:

    • Planning, implementing, and evaluating branch programs and services
    • Preparing work schedules for full and part time employees and assigns employees to specific duties.
    • Responding to customer’s complaints or inquiries with discretion and good judgment in accordance with library policies and procedures.

    Provides outreach to faculty and students including coordinating events, exhibits, social media and other activities at the library that engage and promote learning and reading interest; acts as advocate for the campus library to administrators, faculty, students, in promoting the library services and determining the campus’ needs. 

     

    Assumes primary responsibility for the library’s collection development and weeding and also assists in materials selection and discards for the reference and serials collection.  

     

    Responsible for the library’s annual care & planning including overseeing goal-setting, budgeting, spending, and equipment and furniture upkeep; ensures program goals are executed and documented appropriately. 

     

    Maintains and saves circulation reports generated within the ILS (Integrated Library System) software.  

     

    Report lost items to Technical Service librarian so that the ILS database can be accurate of holdings. 

     

    Ensures Inter Library Loans and transits are processed timely and accurately. 

     

    Assists the technical assistant(s) with the serials control records and checking in items utilizing the ILS (Integrated Library System) software. 

     

    Trains, supervises and evaluates library staff and student workers.  Ensures that staff & student workers have the training and supervision needed to effectively and efficiently perform their job duties. 

     

    Maintains or ensures maintenance of appropriate library files and reports (including the newsletter & Annual Report), daily, weekly and monthly statistics, accurate record of inventory [materials, hardware, furnishings], cash, deposits, and other necessary paperwork. 

     

    Schedules and teaches the library instruction and orientation sessions. 

     

    Oversees the shelving and shelf-reading of materials to ensure shelves are orderly and clean; oversees general housekeeping of all library areas. 

     

    Ensures professional growth by attending PDI courses, workshops, conferences. 

     

    Actively participates in library and campus committees as assigned.    

     

    Works early mornings and evenings as needed to make the library & resources available for faculty and student use. 

     

    Performs other duties as may be assigned by the appropriate authority, including assisting other branch or campus libraries.
